'Jealous / Git Buck' out Wednesday 17th June. Long before Memphis rap reshaped global hip-hop, and before the sound of the underground South travelled from cassette decks into clubs, car stereos and eventually the DNA of modern rap music – there was DJ Spanish Fly, widely recognized as the Godfather of Memphis rap. His raw, bass-heavy tapes circulated hand-to-hand across Tennessee and the wider South throughout the 1980s and 90s, helping define the city’s distinctive street sound, years before the music industry knew what was happening in Memphis. His greatest influence was on his home city where future stars including @djpaulkom, @juicyj, @djsqueeky_, and other local artists studied his tapes and production techniques nobody else in the city had yet grasped. Over the last decade, DJ Spanish Fly and the pioneering Memphis sound he helped create, has been rediscovered by a new global audience of engaged electronic music fans through tastemakers such as synth-collector and producer @legowelt_official and his seminal Memphis Rap mixes, @crystallmess, Berlin-based label @pan__hq and fashion designer @kikokostadinov, as well as @NTS_Radio where DJ Spanish Fly holds a monthly residency, and @BoilerRoomTV who hosted his debut European show at Primavera Festival in 2024. Beyond the enthusiasm of the international underground community, his place in Hip-Hop history cemented further, through champions like A$AP Rocky, and his appearance in the 2016 Netflix series Hip-Hop Evolution. He continues to perform worldwide, from underground rap events and Memphis clubs, to major art institutions including MoMA PS1 and Bourse de Commerce in Paris. photo by @_____neva

“Vigil” in French, Auder’s second language, refers to a guard or a watcher, and this bilingual connotation places even greater emphasis on the album’s title. What will we do when we know the world is watching? Auder wrote many of Whole World As Vigil’s lyrics as theses to live by. “praxis,” as both concept and track, embodies the act of turning belief into action. More than just succumbing to desire, it’s a manifestation that what we deserve is possible. “yes,” one of the purest love songs on the album, most directly gives way to this ecstasy in steadfast declarations, but Whole World As Vigil ultimately imagines what we can do once that’s embraced. The album’s two penultimate tracks offer us a clear statement of intent: “orchards” promising the potential for change, “say nothing“ the possibility that that change will be good. Auder’s baroquely orchestrated pop songs fuse classical, post-rock and experimental elements with contemporary reflections of generational discontent and personal turmoil, resulting in vivid musical portraits which have established her as one of pop’s most singular voices. Auder released her long-awaited debut album ‘the infinite spine’ in 2023 to critical acclaim, which documented how the weight of the world can transform you, following a remarkable run of 3 EPs, 2021’s 5 Songs For The Dysphoric, 2020’s two caves in, and 2018’s Who Carry’s You as well as a myriad of nuanced, poignant singles and collaborations with Vegyn, Celeste, Clams Casino, Caroline Polachek, Boris, Danny L Harle and Wendy & Lisa.

The debut album from Glasgow-based producer TAAHLIAH is the kind of record she would have spun in her room as a teenager, and it aims to be that for the listener. With just glimpses of the slick and sexy dance music she’s become known for, it’s a bold step into weightless balladry and classic pop songwriting.

deathcrash’s third album, Somersaults, glimmers with an everyday euphoria. The London-based slowcore/ post-rock quartet has always had an affinity for building worlds only to crush them. From their breakout EP, People thought my windows were stars (2021), through two critically acclaimed studio albums, Return (2022) and Less (2023), they have been both the architects and the destroyers, the creationists and the ones manning the flood barrier. But, recorded between Black Box Studio in the Loire Valley and Haggerston’s Holy Mountain, Somersaults is almost joyful. Its ten tracks are more vocal heavy than any of the band’s catalogue – think Mark Linkous via The Kinks – but lyrically, Somersaults resists revelation. For all its abrasion, phrases appear half-swallowed, broken off at the edge of meaning, consumed by the smaller textures of living. “Thirty, no career, it fucking worries me / And doing the band doesn’t help,” Banks sings in ‘NYC’. But, “This life is the best life,” he finishes in CMC on top of the ambient white noise of an office printer, thankful that the band is still there, “still making noise in the doorway.” Musical abstractions jettison the same way sunlight might catch the broken glass of a ransacked liquor store. Within those prisms are songs crafted from real hurt, but reflect beautifully. Their role as caretakers of Duster, Low and Codeine’s slowcore lineage is all across Somersaults – songs scud to a narcotic crawl, sound monolithic and inwards before spotlighting a crystalline nothing. Cathartic builds are muddied with tenderness, the bass a heavy grounding, the drums an exhausted heartbeat grasping for air. But more so than ever, even the silence feels collaborative – a gesture of communal trust – friends celebrating the room they’ve made for each other’s ghosts, and some of the biggest, brightest songs they’ve made to date.

Underpinned by their signature detached vocals, their influences draw from synthpop and Detroit electro to cultivate a dissonant and intimate cache of 80s style love songs. The AIM Award nominated debut album from Glasgow-based producer TAAHLIAH is the kind of record she would have spun in her room as a teenager, and it aims to be that for the listener. With just glimpses of the slick and sexy dance music she’s become known for, it’s a bold step into weightless balladry and classic pop songwriting. Following the AIM award-winning EP "Angelica", "Gramarye" is a vulnerable and confessional offering that is TAAHLIAH’s boldest statement so far. From the confident kick thump of "Boys" to the sensitive confessional writing on "Holding On / Let Me Go", this debut bares all sides of its creator.

Ressed / Falter explores the two sides of GB’s artistry, with the bittersweet guitar pop of Ressed contrasting the winding ambience of Falter. New single ‘Fiction Memory’, lifted from Ressed, reckons with the fragility of recollection over uneasy, pensive guitar licks - GB’s words sketch the outline of a “good hearted baddie”, a portrait warped in sunshine by weeks, months, years spent daydreaming. The EP will be pressed on 12” vinyl and is available to order now via our web store & Bandcamp.
